Camp City Year 2010

Photographed By: Carl M. Jenks

Camp City Year was an overwhelming success this year in terms of not only numbers but also teamwork and cooperation from parents, staff and volunteers.  We hosted more than 200 kids on both east and west sides respectively.   The theme this year was the Olympics and the focus was on Healthy Choices.  The kids were placed on teams by country (Chile, Mexico, India, Germany, France and etc…) and learned facts, culture and some of the language. In addition to mastering their countries students also learned about different aspects of health and got a chance to try some different sports.  The days were divided into Nutrition, Hygiene, Emotional Wellness and Body Systems.  The last day was a field day competition between all of the countries.  Students circulated through different stations that tested not only their physical fitness but also how much they had been paying attention to the lessons during the week.  The very last part of the week was devoted to the parent engagement event which included presentations by each team on the countries they had been learning about all week.  The kids had total creative freedom with input from City Year corps members of course.  Every kid in attendance received a medal in recognition of their hard work as well as a few other parting gifts.
