Today in Cleveland, only 53.7% of Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s 52,000 students graduate on time. Just 38.2% of fifth graders score proficient in reading and only 24.9% score proficient in mathematics. Also, the majority of Cleveland Metropolitan School District students, aged 6-17, do not have a safe, structured environment to go after school.
City Year Cleveland collaborates with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District to establish strategic high school student interventions - tutoring, mentoring, after-school programs - to get these at-risk students back on track to graduate and succeed.
In addition, City Year corps members, school students and community members work together through transformative community service projects that build an awareness and understanding of social issues within the community.
We serve in five schools: East Technical High School, Glenville High School, John F. Kennedy High School, Martin Luther King Jr. High School and Thomas Jefferson High School.
